First United Church in uptown Waterloo is seeking a part-time Children and Youth Coordinator. This Coordinator will provide leadership and coordination for existing and new programs aimed at children and youth. This contract position will require 8 hours per week from Jan 2025 – Dec 2025 with a reduction to 5 hours per week in July and August 2025, and offers $20-23/hour depending on qualifications. First United is easily accessible by bus or LRT, a short distance from UW or WLU campuses.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: 

Children and Youth Coordinator

ACCOUNTABILITY:

This position is accountable to the Faith Development Committee and the Ministry & Personnel Committee.

TIME COMMITMENT:

Eight (8) hours per week.  January 2025 to December 2025

Five (5) hours per week – during July and August 2025

RISKS IDENTIFIED:

This position has been identified as medium to high risk, as the Coordinator will be working with children and youth.

SALARY:

$20.00 - $23.00 per hour.

PURPOSE AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Children and Youth Coordinator position aims to promote the importance of faith development for children and youth.

The Coordinator will seek to create a safe space for all children and youth particularly for 2SLGBTQ+ allies, neuro-diverse, and racialized individuals, to connect and explore.

The Coordinator will encourage children’s and youth’s energy, creativity and spiritual growth and empower young generations to make a difference in the present and help to shape the future of First United Church.

The Coordinator will seek to provide programs for children and youth to encourage and welcome greater participation in the life of the church.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Children and Youth Coordinator with the help of volunteers will encourage the establishment of a range of programs for “Generation Now” ministry.  The Coordinator will be responsible for the programs listed below:

 

  • Sunday School - Coordinate and deliver a Sunday School program for a school-age class, that will assist in the spiritual development and creative growth of children.
  • Joint Youth Group – Assist with a bi-monthly gathering of 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusive and neuro-diverse accepting group of teenagers to experience a range of activities in a safe environment. This will be in coordination with the youth leadership of the other three United Churches in Waterloo.
  • Youth Connect – Organize a monthly social gathering for young people i.e. board games, pickle ball or ping pong etc. The activity would be followed by refreshments and a time for fellowship.
  • Messy Church - Coordinate a monthly 2 ½ hour Saturday program for school-age children. This program will include fun activities, worship and a meal with adults accompanying children.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Skilled communicator and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with children and youth
  • Leadership training or experience
  • Experience working or participating in congregations within the United Church of Canada or similar denominations
  • Supportive of the Affirming theology of First United Church
  • Police Check (cost covered by church)

  • Training on cultural diversity, antiracism, neurodiversity, and work with 2SLGBTQIA+ youth
