On October 27th, 2024, our first Intercultural Lunch and Learn event, featuring Egyptian cuisine, music, and storytelling, created a meaningful moment for cultural understanding in our community. With about 90 attendees including 50 guests, a chef, and musicians, the gathering celebrated Egyptian culture and fostered connections among our diverse community members.

Held at Hilliard Hall, this program aimed to provide a safer and more inclusive occasion, especially for racialized groups in Waterloo who may not always have spaces to share and celebrate their heritage. Guests enjoyed authentic Egyptian dishes prepared by a talented chef, with the flavours of Egypt accompanied by traditional music that brought vibrancy and warmth to the occasion. The day was enriched further by singing and storytelling, allowing attendees to learn about the interactions between culture and religion and the rich traditions that shape Egyptian heritage.

We recently heard of the troubling news that “Waterloo region has highest rate of police-reported hate crimes in Canada.” However, this Intercultural Lunch and Learn event is making a meaningful difference in bridging cultural gaps and countering misunderstandings. By creating opportunities for connection and mutual learning, we are building relationships that foster a sense of belonging and respect.

This event is generously funded by the Vision Fund (Seed Grants for Innovative Ministry) and supported by our Outreach Committee. At First United Church, we embody God’s love and help create a community grounded in understanding and respect.

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported this important initiative — together, we are building relationships and living out God’s transforming love!
